Essential Oils
Essential oils, also known as volatile oils, are among the most valuable products in the agricultural industry, with widespread applications in the food, beverage, perfume, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors. Many of these oils have been used historically as traditional remedies across various cultures, and they continue to be utilized today in modern aromatherapy for their therapeutic properties.
Over 3,000 essential oils derived from approximately 2,000 plant species parts; however, around 300 of these are considered commercially significant. In the past decade, the global market for essential oils has exceeded USD 1 billion, highlighting their extensive production and consumption worldwide. These oils are complex mixtures of phytochemicals, including monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, phenylpropanoids, and various aromatic and aliphatic compounds. Their chemical composition is highly dependent on multiple factors, such as plant ecotype or variety, fertilization process, geographic origin, climate conditions, seasonal variations, maturity at harvest, and post-harvest handling. Furthermore, the chemical profile of essential oils is closely linked to the specific plant parts used (such as flowers, leaves, stems, roots, or fruits) and the extraction methods employed.
